Maintenance Coaching: What If You Don’t Need Another Fitness Goal?

Fitness has become obsessed with the next goal.

Lose the weight. Build the muscle. Get the abs. Run the race. Hit the PB. Do the pull up. Start the cut. Finish the cut. Set the next target.

And listen, I love a goal. Goals can give us direction, motivation and something exciting to work towards.

But do we really need to be chasing something all the time?

What if you got to a point where you felt strong, capable and confident in your body? You moved well. You had energy. You understood how to fuel yourself. You could enjoy food without guilt. You trained consistently without your whole life revolving around the gym.

What if you felt the best you've felt in years?

Would you really need another transformation?

Or could the goal simply be to stay there while you get on with your life?

That's what maintenance coaching means to me

When I talk about being a maintenance coach, I don't mean helping someone stay exactly as they are from the day they walk through the door.

Quite the opposite.

My job is to help you build towards the best state of wellbeing we can realistically create for you.

That might mean getting stronger. Building muscle. Improving your mobility. Feeling fitter. Learning how to eat in a way that supports your body. Improving your relationship with exercise. Building confidence in the gym. Getting better at recovering. Or finally creating some bloody consistency after years of stopping and starting.

But eventually, something really lovely happens.

You realise you're not constantly trying to “fix” yourself anymore.

You've built a body that's strong and capable. You've got habits that support you. You understand what your body needs. Training has become part of your life rather than something you repeatedly fall off and have to restart.

Now we get to keep it.

Because maintaining something is a skill

Getting results gets most of the attention in fitness.

Keeping them? Not nearly enough.

Anyone can follow a rigid plan for six weeks when life is relatively calm. The bigger skill is knowing how to look after yourself when work gets manic, you're travelling, your social life gets busy, you haven't slept brilliantly, you're going through a stressful period or you simply don't fancy making fitness your number one priority right now.

That's where maintenance coaching becomes incredibly valuable.

We're not constantly asking:

“How can we do more?”

Sometimes we're asking:

“What's enough right now?”

Enough training to maintain your strength.

Enough movement to keep your body feeling good.

Enough mobility to stay capable.

Enough nutritious food to support your health.

Enough recovery to actually benefit from all of it.

And enough flexibility that you can go out for dinner, travel, work hard, have relationships, raise children, drink the wine, eat the cake, miss a workout and generally be a human being.

Because your wellbeing should support your life, not compete with it.

You don't always need a goal

This one can feel strange because we've been taught that progress needs to be measurable.

What's your goal weight?

What's your next PB?

What's the next event?

What are we working towards?

Sometimes there will be a goal, and we'll absolutely go after it.

But sometimes a client tells me they're happy.

They feel strong. Their clothes feel good. Training feels good. Their energy is good. They're enjoying their food. They're living their life.

And my response isn't:

“Right, what can we change next?”

It's:

“Fabulous. Let's keep you here.”

There is nothing lazy, unambitious or stagnant about that.

Being able to maintain a healthy, strong, happy body without constantly needing to push it towards something else is an achievement in itself.

Your “best” won't look the same all year

Maintenance also doesn't mean keeping your body, training or routine frozen in time.

Life has seasons.

There might be periods where you're training four times a week and feeling unstoppable. There might be periods where two good sessions and your daily walks are plenty.

Sometimes we'll push.

Sometimes we'll pull back.

Sometimes we'll chase a goal.

Sometimes we'll simply maintain.

The point is that you don't have to keep swinging between ALL IN and completely off the wagon every time life changes.

We adjust.

That's coaching.

This is why I coach for life

I don't want my clients to need perfect circumstances to feel well.

And I definitely don't want them believing that the only successful version of fitness is one where they're perpetually trying to become smaller, leaner, stronger, faster or somehow “better.”

I want to help you build a foundation that's strong enough to survive real life.

To get you feeling bloody brilliant and then give you the tools, knowledge, habits and support to stay feeling bloody brilliant while you actually live.

There will still be goals.

There will still be progress.

There will still be periods where we decide to turn things up and see what you're capable of.

But there can also be long, beautiful stretches where nothing needs fixing.

You're strong.

You're moving.

You're nourishing yourself.

You're looking after your mind.

You're enjoying your life.

And that's enough.

You don't have to spend your whole life chasing the person you want to become.

Sometimes you get to become that person, and then just live.

That, to me, is maintenance coaching.

Train for life. Then go and bloody live it.
